Fiji’s Tabakaucoro on the Road to Rio

by Lorraine Genia – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The fastest man in the Pacific has quickly become one of the most liked and talked about in Papua New Guinea, not just because of his unbelievable speed on the tracks but because of his humbling charisma.

Banuve Tabakaucoro isn’t just looking to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics and represent his native Fiji, he’s also looking to represent his Melanesian brothers and sisters.

“Well it was pretty good, considering how strong the wind was and the competition was pretty good,” said Tabakaucoro on his Pacific Games performance.

” I’m pretty pleased with my performance and you know, it was just 0.03 off of qualifying for the Olympics, so that was pretty close.”

He speaks of the 2015 Pacific Games as one of the most overwhelming experiences of his athletic career. And although there is a sense of pressure with the support of Papua New Guinea and Fiji behind him, he remains confident about qualifying for the upcoming games in Brazil.

Coach Bola Tafoou was also disappointed in Banuve’s performance; however he too is confident in Banuve’s qualification.

Papua New Guinea sprinters Toea Wisil, Betty Burua and Nelson Stone will also be travelling to China for the World Championships, in the ropes of furthering their chances of also qualifying for Rio 2016.
