The Higher Education Minister, Malakai Tabar, today ordered the University council at the University of Natural Resources and Environment to reinstate the Student Representative council.
Minister Tabar today made a special visit to the Vudal campus in East New Britain for the first time after student’s boycotted classes three weeks ago.
Speaking to the students today, Tabar told the University council to take note that, “it is legal to have a student representative council in place. Having no SRC is no right”Tabar said.
The three weeks long boycott follows a petition presented to the university council calling for the reinstatement of the SRC that went obsolete in 2009.
The higher education minister also ordered the University council to call a SRC election within the next 5 days and elect an SRC before lectures resume next Monday.
Last week, the student body gathered and also protested and demanded for a mass withdrawal from the institution.
They also forced the closure of all administration operation, including all lecture halls.
Their action attracted armed policeman from Kerevat who were called into the campus by the admin to control the situation.
Student leaders told EM TV News that they won’t attend lectures until their petition is addressed.
