Surf’s Up!

If sun, sand and surf is the kind of holiday you’re looking for, consider one of Papua New Guinea’s ideal surfing destinations – Vanimo.

Voted one of the world’s best kept surfing secret destinations, Vanimo, located close to the shared border between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, has been visited by surfers worldwide since the 1980’s.

This pristine setting boasts of a good range of surf breaks from crumbly waves for the novice surfer to reforms and tubing waves for the more experienced. Swells travel in from a northerly direction producing breaks from 2 feet to 10 feet all season.

Surfing visitors are kept to a maximum of 20 visitors per surfing location in PNG- an initiative of the Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea. On most days you will find not more than 6 surfers per break.

Although there is other accommodation available, the Vanimo Surf Lodge specifically caters to surf holiday travelers looking for adventure and exploration, with local breaks easily accessible by foot, land and sea.  Spacious living quarters have a traditional hut theme with modern comforts and can sleep 3 to 4 people with room to spare for surf boards and gear. Booking in advance allows the lodge to notify the Surfing Association of PNG to ensure that spaces are available on your planned travelling dates.

Holiday makers wishing to travel via Australia, can book through PNG’s national carriers – Air Nuigini or Airlines PNG, departing either from Brisbane or Cairns, with connection flights through Port Moresby to Vanimo.

Surfing season runs from November till April every year.
