Students Celebrate Provincial Day

Today was not only marked as Repentance Day for the country, but also a day of celebration for the Manus community in the nation’s capital.

The day brought together many, to not only showcase traditional art, craft and dance, but to acknowledge Manus as a province of the country.

The dull day did not stop the Manus community in the city to celebrate their day at the Gerehu Secondary School.

Stalls displayed the Manus basket and necklaces which are unique to the province.

We even got the chance to talk to one of the ladies who were there to dance, as well as display and sell their traditional items.

Helen Suri gave us a glimpse of how each Manus basket that is woven, describes the place it is from and she also talked to us about the decorations worn by dancers which represents the islands or villages that they hail from.

Like all the other provinces that celebrated their provincial day, much preparations had to take place, in terms of finance as well as logistics but UPNG Manus Students Association President, Pokuwei Siniu said the students managed well balancing school and preparations for the day.

All funds for the day was put together by the students through fundraising, however NCD Governor, Powes Parkop also assisted the students with ten thousand kina for the day.
