Sports, Venues and Dates for Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Released

The 2016 Summer Olympics will be staged in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, from the 5th to the 21st of August. Rugby Sevens and Golf are new sports that have been added, with all sporting competitions to be held across 33 venues situated throughout the Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã regions of the city of Rio.

The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the Maracanã Stadium.

The Olympic Games are considered to be the world’s biggest sporting competition, with more than 13,000 athletes competing, representing almost every nation in the world.

The Rio 2016 Olympics sports, venues and start dates are listed below:  

  • Archery: Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí (Aug. 6 – 12)
  • Badminton: Riocentro – Pavillion 4 (Aug. 11 – 20)
  • Basketball: Olympic Training Centre (Aug. 6 – 21)
  • Boxing: Riocentro – Pavilion 2 (Aug. 6 – 21)
  • Canoeing (slalom competition): Olympic Whitewater Stadium (Aug. 7 – 11)
  • Canoeing (sprints competition): Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas (Aug. 15 – 20)
  • Cycling (BMX): Olympic BMX Centre (Aug. 17 – 19)
  • Cycling (Mountain Biking): Olympic Mountain Bike Park (Aug. 20 – 21)
  • Cycling (Track): Rio Olympic Velodrome (Aug. 11- 16)
  • Cycling (Road): Flamengo Park (Aug. 6 – 10)
  • Diving: Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre (Aug. 7 – 9)
  • Equestrian: National Equestrian Centre (Aug. 7 – 19)
  • Fencing: Olympic Training Centre – Hall 3 (Aug. 6 – 14)
  • Field Hockey: Olympic Hockey Centre (Aug. 7 – 20)
  • Golf: Reserva de Marapendi (Men play Aug. 11 – 14; Women play Aug. 17 – 20)
  • Gymnastics: Arena Olímpica do Rio (Aug. 6 – 21)
  • Handball: Olympic Training Centre (Aug. 6 -21)
  • Judo: Olympic Training Centre – Hall 2 (Aug. 6 – 12)
  • Marathon: Sambódromo (women’s marathon on Aug. 14; men’s marathon on Aug. 21)
  • Modern pentathlon: Deodoro Modern Pentathlon Park (Aug. 18 -21)
  • Race Walking: Flamengo Park (men’s 20-kilometre Aug. 12; men’s 50-kilometre Aug. 19; women’s 20-kilometre Aug. 19)
  • Rowing: Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas (Aug. 6 – 13)

  • Sailing: Marina da Gloria (Aug. 5 – 21)
