Special Police Constables Tasked With Clamping Illegal Mining in Pogera

by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

A 2 week induction course for the Force Support Battalion ended last Friday with 36 PNGDF soldiers presented with certificates as special police constables.

The 3rd induction course for the PNGDF soldiers deployed to the State of Emergency Call out Operation in the Pogera Valley, Enga Province.

36 Defense Force personnel were certified under the National Constitution and the Police Force Act to carry out policing duties.

After the National Government extended the call out operation for another 3 months, more soldiers and police personnel have been sent to Pogera to control illegal mining and law and order problems.

Former Police Commissioner, Sir Ila Geno, said the Special Police Constables are now tasked with a big responsibility.

The Support Battalion will work with the Police Mobile Unit (MS12) based at Laiagam to clamp down on illegal miners.

Meanwhile over the weekend 56 illegal miners were arrested by the Force Support Battalion and will appear in court this week.
