New Multi-Drug Resistant TB Ward for Kundiawa

The Sir Joseph Nombre Memorial General Hospital in Kundiawa, Simbu Province, opened their new Multi-Drug Resistant TB ward, Genetic lab and Administration block.

The MDR TB ward and Genetics Lab is the hospital’s step into ensuring the immediate identification and response to MDR TB cases.

The Genetic lab has in place two high resolution microscopes, costing around K300,000.

The microscopes are capable of identifying the MDR TB, TB, and human papillomavirus, the virus that causes cervical cancer.

The hospital has had 14 cases of MDR TB in Kundiawa, so far 10 have been successfully treated and two are still under treatment.

Sir Joseph Nombre Memorial General Hospital also staged an open day; where the hospital services were showcased to the general public. Each department showcased their function and the equipment they use.

Sir Joseph Nombre Memorial General Hospital Chief Executive officer, Mathew Kaluvia, says the hospital has a responsibility to inform the public on what they provide. He also thanked Simbu Provincial Government under Noah Kool’s leadership for the constant funding, ensuring the hospital is upgraded.

“The purpose of the open day is that the hospital has an obligation to the public; the board has an obligation to the public to showcase what we have been providing in this hospital.”

“We have MDR TB cases in Simbu province, so we have built the MDR TB Ward. Its for the people of simbu, we would like to be the forefront runners fighting against the MDR TB. We don’t want to wait until the MDR TB starts popping up in various communities.”

“I would like to thank Simbu Provincial Government for their constant funding. I have not seen any member of parliament as serious about health services than Governor, Noah Kool. I would like to pass my sincere thank you for his partnership and funding.”

Funding for the infrastructure came from Simbu Provincial Government, National Fishery Authorities and SJNM Kundiawa General Hospital Board.

The new infrastructure and equipment costed almost about K1 million. Sir Joseph Nombre Memorial General Hospital is a stage 6 hospital as listed by the Department of Health.
