The developer of Simberi Mining Project has undertaken to support landowners inthe area of business development.
The company made this undertaking duringthe review ofthe project’s Memorandum of Agreement recently in Kavieng, New Ireland Province, to consult withthe Simberi Mine Area Association to develop a business plan and provide an initial funding.
The developer said it is keen to supportthe landowner group to ensure long term sustainable business development. “We’re very keen to support businesses to developthe local communities…and to that end, we’re strongly supportingthe umbrella company for the various businesses that will be set up on Simberi Island…not just Simberi Island but also for New Island Province,” said Jeff Waddington, SGL GM – Environment and Community Development.
This undertaking was well received bythe landowners.
“We believe in this plan, because it addressed allthe fundamentals of having to establish a good competitive business plan,” Vincent Maris, Vice Chairman of Simberi Mine Area Association. “The plan looks at creating opportunities for the landowners and atthe same time promotes landowner participation,” he said.
This is yet anther plus for the landowners and is in line withthe national government’s recent initiative throughthe Small Medium Enterprise.
