Sewered Festivities

By Vasinatta Yama -EMTV, Port Moresby

Residents at the rundown Works compound at 4 Mile have complained of the fetid smell, discharged by a rundown sewerage system.

They say that no authority has taken ownership of the blockage for more than two months.

The sewerage was overflowing with stench in the morning, but when the sun rose, the odour was repulsively overwhelming.

Waste matters streamed out, polluting the air, making people sick, including small children who had no idea of what was going on.

A long-time resident, Andrew Yopa, said the sewerage is located at the works compound, a short distance from Eda Ranu Operations depot.

He blamed Eda Ranu for ignoring the spillage, and claims it may have been caused by a Work’s contractor.

He said one of the pipes connected was not levelled with the others which caused the blockage.

EMTV News could not get comments from Eda Ranu, as they are closed for this festive season.

Meanwhile, the residents said that they have had sleepless nights and have not even eaten in their homes.

They are frustrated that they could not enjoy their Christmas celebrations.

And with New Year only a few days away, they are asking for the authorities to take a stern look into the matter.
