Severe Dry Season and Frost Expected in PNG

Papua New Guinea is expected to experience the worse dry season and frost over the next four months; according to the National Weather Service, this may affect food security and water levels.

Director, Samuel Maiha, said the fear now, is if these conditions are prolonged indefinitely.

Heads of the National Weather Service and National Disaster Centre confirmed today, that the dry season and frost in parts of the country will extend.

They say, the fear for this is weather conditions are now unpredictable, meaning it would have long term effects on communities in the country.

Mr Maiha says, there is great concern of worse effects, of more frost in the Highlands, and delays in rainfall.

With parts of Morobe, and New Britain experiencing drought and frost gripping the Highlands region, NDC Acting Director, Martin Mose says, disaster preparedness in provinces is below average.

The National Government has not allocated or indicated any funding as yet, Mr Mose says, a collective approach must be taken as the magnitude of the effects of the drought and frost is huge.

A committee has been formed and will meet Chief Secretary, Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc, tomorrow for discussions of the current disaster in the country.
