Sevens Rugby Back in Port Moresby

By Lorraine Genia – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The hosting of the Amaiu Sevens tournament is expected to see some form of consistency return to the Capital Rugby Union (CRU).

The home of rugby union in Port Moresby, Bava Park, was demolished as part of the government’s plan on upgrading facilities for the 2015 Pacific Games.

Since the conclusion of the games, rugby in the nation’s capital has sat idle.

With the support of newly appointed President, Jacob Anga, and tournament director, Paul Joseph, rugby will be welcomed back into the community.

Sevens fever will return once again, following the successful hosting of the 2015 National Provincial Sevens Championship earlier this month.

The Amaiu Sevens tournament will see 26 teams from Papua New Guinea compete.

Rugby sevens has been on the rise in Papua New Guinea, after the Pukpuks and Palais display in the Pacific Games and most recently with the successful rollout of the 2015 National Provincial Championships and in the union’s efforts to maintain the momentum.

Spartans, Southern Chiefs, Harlequins and teams who made an appearance at the NPC7s are expected to feature in this weekend’s tournament.

Men’s teams:
Baike Brothers, Brothers, Craftsman Hurricanes, Crusaders, Defence, Fly, Haka’tautai, Harlequins, Juggernauts, McGregor, NH Vikings, Nova, PNG Turagus, SLS Cowboys, Southern Chiefs, Spartans, Taurama Diggers, Team North-East, University, Valley Hunters and Wanderers

Women’s teams:
Spartans, Southern Chiefs, Harlequins, Fly, University and Nova
