Sentence Submitted on Rape Case

A sentence will be handed down shortly by Justice Panuel Mogish for three men involved in the rape of a woman in 2012.

The  trio are Lolo Bellamy, Hobai Haro and Douba Kapini. They have been convicted on four counts of aggravated rape each.

The maximum penalty for rape cases is life imprisonment. The trio’s lawyer argued that the court should give a reasonable sentence based on the circumstance of the matter.

He said no weapon was used and the three had no prior convictions.

However, the state lawyer argued that the court in its own discretion has a strong need to recognise the harm these men have done to the victim.

The matter has been adjourned indefinitely, pending the sentencing.
