Standard Based Curriculum over Outcome Based Education

By Colleen Barilae – EMTV, Lae

The Outcome Based Education (OBE) system has been labeled as lacking reasonable comprehension methods by a senior education official.

Nawaeb Education Coordinator in Morobe Michael Gerson says the skills applied in the OBE system lack research methods.

This comes following a high number of students in the country going through an education system described as self-taught.

Gerson says the new education system is designed in a way that students would be in control of their learning skills.

Currently, some students require specific mentoring from their teachers and are not familiar with research skills.

With the new OBE system, unlike Standard Based Curriculum, students are taught in a scope and sequence mode.

This means students are given particular topics of learning in a fixed time frame, to fully understand the concept before moving onto another.

The OBE being a foreign education system has been described by the senior education professional as not applicable to PNG.

Most education professionals have called for changes to be made to improve the standard of education in the country.
