Rural Community Gets New Basketball Court

BSP has 45 community projects selected for 2016 and these projects will be delivered through Branches and Strategic Business Units (SBU).

One of which was a new basketball court for Taguru, a community located two hours by road from Mendi.

The community had a court with makeshift rings attached to wooden poles with no boards. The court was dug out, and flattened naturally through community members using the surface.

Over three weekends, staff from BSP Mendi with the help of a local contractor set a solid concrete foundation for the court, setting up basketball hoops to the boards and reinforcing these to steel poles.

Branch Manager for BSP Mendi, Billy Veveloga, said “This was a good way to give back to this community. The feeling was good, especially when we met up with the people who also volunteered to help us. We take pride in being an integral part of a community; not just as a bank but as a person in the community, who is able to contribute to make a difference.”

The community also showed initiative by assisting the staff with manual tasks such as cleaning the court area, cementing, painting and landscaping.

Taguru Councillor Terry Tame was pleased with the contribution.

“The new court is one of the community assets, and will bring good things to the community, with a lot of opportunities for the youths to take part in sports, organise competitions within the community and keep busy,” he said.

BSP is delivering projects that leave lasting changes in the communities in which they operate in.
