Rugby 9s to Develop Code

by Skola Sengi – EM TV, Port Moresby

Rugby League remains one the most-watched sports in the country with the biggest following.

With the success sister-code Rugby Union has seen with reviving Rugby 7s, the PNGRFL have adapted a similar concept with Rugby 9s in developing the growth of the code in the country.

While most players are accustomed to playing the traditional 13-a-side format, Rugby 9s is pacier, providing an avenue to increase participation, showcase different styles of rugby and be a pool where players are selected from to feed seeded clubs in major competitions such as the Digicel Cup, the SP PNG Hunters and other representative duties in the Kumuls.

The introduction of Rugby 9s will hope to spark a bigger following around the country and further strengthen the code.

PNGRFL will roll out the first leg of the Super Rugby 9s tournament at Kwikila Station.

The two-day tournament will run from Saturday the 14th to Sunday, the 15th of February and has attracted16 teams.

Last year’s runners-up in the Central Province Premier RFL, Goilala Karukas, Southern Region 9s Bowl winners, Moresby Souths Taudia, Tarangau and the Oro Butterflies, will compete for the top prize this weekend.
