After more than twelve months, neglected rubbish and clogged drainage systems at the border of Port Moresby General Hospital and the UPNG Medical School were finally addressed.
The hospital responded to Health Minister Michael Malabag’s call to take ownership of the issue, which includes waste water spillage.
Yesterday, EM TV witnessed the clean-up for a while before being asked to vacate the area by hospital security upon receiving directions from the hospital management.
EM TV did, however, capture footage of two massive containers holding rubbish and debris from what used to be a heap of abandoned garbage behind a state institution that ironically bears the slogan ‘Better Health’. The drainage system was previously clogged with debris and dirt.
As of now, the area is cleared, allowing the smooth flow of drainage water. But the overall sewerage system is yet to receive a major revamp.
Three weeks ago when EM TV reported the issue, hospital management claimed that the affected area was not within their boundaries. However, EM TV was advised yesterday by an employee of the hospital that the land belongs to the state through the Health Department and Port Moresby General Hospital.
The same sentiment was reiterated by Health Minister Michael Malabag this week when queried about the issue.
Hospital support staff living in the community has also been dealing with condemned housing and an unhygienic lavatory system. Malabag said illegal settlemen’s also reside in the area and once they have vacated the land, proper housing will be constructed for hospital staff.
