Rice Relief Reaches Komo-Magarima District

By Jack Lapauve Jr, EMTV – Port Moresby

Komo-Magarima District in Hela province has commenced its rice relief distribution for the affected ward councils.

Hulia Local Level Government was the first.

Komo-Magarima MP, Francis Potape, says the effort to distribute rice is also challenging amongst the pressing demands of the drought.

“It’s not that easy to bring all these containers of rice from Lae up to Hela”, it cost a lot and needs attention from those who are involved in the transportation of these relief supplies,” said MP Potape.

About 8,000 bags of rice were transported from Lae to Hela.

The 29 wards of Hulia LLG received 300 bags of rice each. MP Potape says, all Ward Councils will receive equal share of rice rations.

There are reports of drought related deaths but the local MP says, the health division is yet to confirm with findings.

“Health Officials are establishing investigations to proof if the deaths are drought related,” Potape said.

Rice distribution to other LLG’s in the district will continue in the coming weeks.

The 8,000 bags of rice were purchased through the Prime Minister’s Department under the National Disaster Office, and with the support of K200,000 from the Hela Provincial Government.
