Red Cross Special Education Centre

by Merilyn Diau-Katam – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Red Cross Special Education and Resource Centre is one of  four centres in Port Moresby that caters for children with disabilities.

The learning centre focuses on the children’s special needs and also teaches them basic maths and language skills.

The Senior Inclusive Officer, Christine Kenia, said it is a challenging task with a handful of teachers and assistant aid workers from the Red Cross, but there is not enough staff to attend to the children.

Kenia said the school sees some of the children commute to school on their own, which presents a need for the school to provide safe transport for the children which they currently cannot do.

Today, the students had a special visit from the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant. The students put on a heart-warming welcome show for the contestants.

The contestants, accompanied by the reigning Miss PNG, Grace Nugi, and pageant patron, Lynda Babao-O’Neill, were at the school as part of their humanitarian service to the community.
