Rape suspects caught: ANGAU Staff back to work

ANGAU Hospital in Lae, resumed services after being forced to close since Sunday overthe rape of a nurse. This came after police arrested five suspects.

More than two hundred workers, nurses and management including students’from Lae School of Nursing withnessedthe petition given tothe members ofthe Tutumang yesterday.

Representttingthe Provincial Government was Morobe’s Law and Order Chairman Peter Namus and Provincial Administrator Kemasang Tomala.

The petition containedthe list of things; Staff housing and security werethe priority areas amongst thers.

Mr Tomala saysthere is a gap betweenthe Provincial Government of Morobe and Angau Hospital that needs to be tightened.

Whilethe petition is to be reviewed and assessed in June,the representative ofthe Provincial Government has assuredthe Angau Hospital for close corporation.

Two days ago staff and management ofthe hospital carrlied out a sitting strike triggered bythe rape of a nurse overthe weekend in her home in East Taraka.

The hospital staff ceasedtheir operations and issued a forty eight hours ultimatum tothe Lae police demanding arrest onthe criminals. And as of yesterday, Lae police with help of East Taraka community lLeadershave apprehended five suspects involved inthe rape incident.

Be mid-day yesterdaythe medical services at Angau were restored afterthe arrest ofthe five suspect rapists.

While public anger is still mounting,they are calling for severe penalties to be deal withthe offenders. The petition is currently underthe view of Morobe Provincial Government and its review in June will most likely put an end to some ofthe law and order problems inthe province.
