Ramu Nickel Mine Workers Going On Strike

By Martha Louis- EM TV News, Lae

The Ramu Nickel Mine National Workers went on strike this morning demanding that all Chinese Workers be repatriated and a redundancy exercise carried out.

Ramu Nickel Allied Union President, Justin Mandi, said the workers submitted an 11-point petition on January 7.

Among the points raised, were working conditions, safety standards and the language barrier between the locals and the Chinese.

However, the company’s management response has not been accepted by the employees on Wednesday and they staged a sit in protest.

As of this morning, all operations have stopped.
