Rabaul: Mt Tavurvur Volcanic Eruption

The Mt Tavurvur volcano in Rabaul, East New Britain, erupted around 3am this morning, throwing ash and lava into the skies of Rabaul town.

As the volcano continues to erupt sporadically, the vegetation in and around Rabaul is being smothered by ashfall.

All social activities like Sport have temporarily ceased until further notice.

Evacuation of people in danger zones in and around Rabaul town is ongoing.

As of 9am this morning, Hubert Minana, President of East New Britain Rugby Football Union, told EM TV that sudden powerful blasts from the volcano were heard, sending shockwaves which rattled houses.

“Most people don’t seem to be scared or in a panic, and it’s relatively not as damaging as the 1994 eruption, but a volcanic eruption is a volcanic eruption,” Hubert told EM TV.

Air Niugini Kokopo advised this morning, business was normal and flights were still departing Tokua.

Early this morning, the Agmark Gurias team made it on a flight out of Tokua as the wind direction was blowing away from Tokua Airport.

The Gurias are on their way to the grand final of the Digicel Cup in Lae, where they will be taking on the Hela Wigmen.
