Port Moresby Rugby League Grand Final

By Judah Memafu – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

The Port Moresby Rugby League (PRL) will have stage its 66th grand final this weekend, with Royals going up against Brothers in what is anticipated to be a great match.

While Brothers have had consecutive finals experience in a relatively short time, for the Royals the wait has been 19 years long.

The PRL has enjoyed a consecutive run of 66 years of rugby league competition in the nation’s capital since the establishment of the association in 1949.

The past two years have not been an easy journey for the PRL. Despite the difficulties and challenges they have faced, it has not stopped them from maintaining the competition and producing outstanding results.

Dr. James Naipao, who is the President of the PRL, announced today that the association is looking forward to going back to its home ground, formerly the Lloyd Robson Oval, now newly christened the National Football Stadium.

He also added that he, along with his committee are very thankful to the PNG Defence Force, particularly Brigadier-General Francis Toropo for allowing them the use of Murray Barracks Oval these last two seasons.

This weekend will see a total of six teams battling it out for grand final glory.

The under 19 division sees POM Defence go up against Brothers, while in the women’s comp; Souths take on Royals.
