Polye: Release Funds for Vital Projects

Treasury Minister Don Polye has called its own government institutions to release funds to implement vital projects.

He made particular reference tothe Port Moresby Sewerage Project which is yet to get offthe ground. The project was signed in 2010 bythe government and JICA.

Treasury Minister Don Polye returned fromIndia content withthe 46th Beard of Governors Asian Development bank meeting. Bet he was concerned aboutthe delay inthe implementation of vital projects inthe country.

He saidthere is no need to borrow more money, wherethere is money available. He questioned whythere is a delay inthe drawdown ofthese funds.

Mr. Polye’saidthe process must be expedited for work to begin mid this year. The Port Moresby Sewerage project he said shows how ineffective implementation is.

He also called on donor partners to shift from a project to project financing to program financing to allow for an integrated approach to development.

Withthe danger posed bythe down turn in global economic activitythe Treasure is also pushing for a strict fiscal discipline. This would mean government agencies must spend withinthe budget appropriation of a particular project.
