Police Officers Suspended For Assaulting Buai Vendors in Central Province

By Theckla Gunga –  EM TV, Port Moresby

Six police officers in Port Moresby were suspended in relation to the assault of vendors in Roburogo Betel nut market in Central province.

National Capital District and Central Divisional Commander, Jerry Frank, when announcing this said the police hierarchy will not entertain ill behaviors of policemen or women.

Commander Frank said all six officers are subjected to the law and are on full suspension.

Frank described their actions as unprofessional and said the incident could have been prevented if the officers have acted ethically.

The suspended officers are members of the Dog Unit and Special Services Division or SSD.

Their suspension is a result of their involvement in assaulting and damaging private properties.

On Tuesday, vendors at Roburogu about an hour’s drive out of Port Moresby claimed a number of police officers physically and verbally assaulted them, destroyed their properties and drove away with money, which belonged to the vendors.

They argued that reasons for the assaults were not known and claim they were innocently attacked.

This footage taken on Thursday shows the aftermath of what locals claim as an“ illegal raid”.

For the officers who were suspended, they will be investigated by the Internal Investigation Unit.

But for the affected villagers, they will have to dig deeper into their pockets to buy back the things they lost during the raid.
