Police Are Doing Their Job: Lae Police Boss

Lae Metropolitan SuperintendentoIvan Lakatani, has responded to criticism that while police where atthe polling sit’sthe rest ofthe city was left open to criminals.

 

Lakatani was upset that ongoing efforts by police weren’t taken into consideration.

“We cannot be at two places at one time inthe city. Criminals monitorthe position of our units. They are getting smarter,” said Metropolitan SuperintendentoIvan Lakatani.
 

Lae Police has around 250 personnel for a city of 400 thousand people and basic operations stretchtheir capacity.  They have had to work hard to combat inthe sprawling city.

 

“Crime just happens every day and doing our Job is very tough,” said Lakatani.
 

Forthe last nine monthsthe city has seen an increase in serious violent crimes.

 

The most recent beingthe killing of a youth at Nawaeb block which sparked a violent riot where properties were torched.
