by Shane Saroya – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The Papua New Guinea Women’s basketball team had a farewell launch at the Shady Rest Hotel today, before departing to the Philippines, for the Annual Perlas Discovery Cup Womens International in Davoa City.

The team will be joined by two Australian-based squad members and will take on hosts, Philippines and Turkmenistan at the tournament.

The girls have trained hard at the High Performance Training Centre in the build up to the tournament with the help of Trainer, Hannah Ilave, and Team Head Coach, Thalo Green. Green expressed confidence in the team performing well in the Philippines.

Assistant Coach, Salape Parapa, recently joined the team. With her experience from being a gold medallist at the 1991 South Pacific Games, her contribution is invaluable to the team.

Team representative, Dianne Hani, said it was a good opportunity to prove themselves to their new coach

From the current 20 members, the team will be trimmed down to 15, with the final squad of 12 members, to be announced after the tournament.
