Papua New Guinea has been awarded the hosting rights for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2016. The announcement was made today at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, followed by the FIFA Executive Committee meeting.

Papua New Guinea Football Association President David Chung, who is also the OFC President and FIFA Vice-President, was delighted following the announcement. Chung said PNGFA has worked closely with the PNG Government to prepare this bid, and it is very pleasing that Papua New Guinea will welcome the football world in 2016.

The 16-team tournament will involve the host cities of Port Moresby, Lae and Kokopo and it is proposed the tournament be held in November. PNG successfully hosted the OFC Women’s Nations Cup in Kokopo last year, and will soon play host to the OFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament during the 15th Pacific Games in preparation to host the FIFA event.

PNGFA is confident that in partnership with the Government and the friendly people of Papua New Guinea, we will put on a great event that will showcase the future stars of women’s football, with the backdrop being our diverse culture and language.

Following on from the hosting of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Tahiti in 2013 and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand in May, this decision will open the way for other Pacific countries to host FIFA events.
