PNG’s Taekwondo Team for Rio Olympics

by Jeremy Mogi – EM TV, Port Moresby

The Rio Olympics are firmly in the sights of Papua New Guinea’s Taekwondo Team, with Head Coach, Andreas Rutten, believing the home ground advantage will prove a decisive factor.

The Oceania Qualification process for the Rio Olympics will commence in Port Moresby in February, and team PNG is already preparing their fighters.

Utilising the world class facilities provided, Rutten believes that with the right support, PNG’s Taekwondo team will have the opportunity to perform to expectation.

Australian fighters will be part of the contingent travelling for the Oceania titles which will be hosted in Port Moresby, and the hope, is that, with some of those fighters already having qualified for the Olympics, and with the exclusion of the French Territories in the pacific, PNG will bode well.

In the Pacific Games, the team collected silver medals in the team events, and gold individually, with the country’s brightest talent, undoubtedly being Rainner Peni. Other fighters up for contention are Colland Kokin, Noeline Hetama and Theresa Tona.
