PNG Poultry Industry urges stakeholders to improve bio security standards

President of the PNG Poultry Industry Association says if proper bio security standards are established, poultry alone can generate up to K450 million a year in revenue.

Chris Prestwood told EMTV, the industry, along with other sectors, have not reached their full potential, given the poor framework surrounding bio security. He says authorities have been pushed to assist the Government develop a working system for the country. The President of the PNGPIA believes all stakeholders can help the Government.

The Poultry Industry in PNG has met its targets for the domestic market annually, despite 15 years of struggles. It has shown potential to export and compete in the world market.

President Prestwood says the recent New Zealand trip has positioned the Poultry Industry and Government on the right path for work to begin.

National Planning Minister Richard Maru gave an overview comparing bio-security standards used in PNG. He says the Government considers this to be a priority area, at a time it is shifting its focus to the non-renewable sector.

A bio security forum will be held next week in Lae, Morobe province.
