PNG Police: Baki In Vaki Out

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki was this afternoon revoked as Police commissioner by the National Executive Council in Port Moresby and replaced by former commissioner Garry Baki.

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, made the announcement in the presence of Cabinet Ministers including the Police Minister, Robert Atiafy.

The move to remove the then commissioner Geoffrey Vaki as Police Commissioner comes as a number of police investigations resulted in what the prime minister described as not satisfying.

This includes the investigations into the Hanuabada killings which were handed over by investigation team on Tuesday 5th May by the Acting Divisional Commander Jerry Frank.

The PM said communication was lacking between officers of the Commissioner and the Police Minister.

“There is no proper communication between the two officers and that is not health for the country because PNG will be hosting major events like the Pacific Games in July and the 2018 APEC Leaders’ Summit”, said O’Neill.

He said the government needs someone to reinstall public confidence in police.

Commissioner Baki’s appointment is as effective as of today.
