Lagona Lights Up Potential Sevens Success

By Julie Badui Owa – EM TV Online

Rugby Sevens is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

The sport only began to gain popularity here in Papua New Guinea in 2007, and since its inception the PNG National Women’s Rugby Sevens team has enjoyed momentous success.

You probably stood on your feet watching yesterday’s live action, and the run-away try by hardworking forward Joanne Lagona during their 33-5 defeat of New Caledonia at BSP Stadium.

Lagona is one of the real stars of rugby sevens in PNG, a player who can turn a game on its head and excite the crowd like few others can.

Full of energy and enthusiasm, the crowd can’t help but get behind her and her fellow teammates. When she accelerates with the ball to the try line, she’s almost unstoppable.

Joanne Lagona is known to be the Papua New Guinean version of former Australian Wallabie enforcer, David Campese. Also known as Campo, he represented Australian on 101 occasions, and at one time held the world record for the most tries in test matches.

Lagona is always mistaken for a male, racing through the field like lightning and scoring tries like they are going out of fashion.

So don’t miss out on all the live action from the women’s sevens competition, which includes the exploits of Joanne Lagona and the rest of Team PNG. Every game can be seen here on EM TV, the live broadcaster of the 2015 Pacific Games.

They take on Tahiti, today, at 5pm. So tune in!
