PNG Music Awards

The music industry in Papua New Guinearecognized its artists for their efforts in contributing tothe development of local music last night.

 

Artists came from aroundthe country and from withinthe region to staketheir claim ontheir prestigious music awards but only a few went home lucky.

 

Forthe first time three artists were awardedthe Rookie ofthe Year award.

Despitethe rain fans turned out in record numbers to be part ofthe music industry night of nights –the Digicel Yumi FPNG Music Awards.

The stakes were high this year for the various categories with are number of new artists makingtheir mark onthe music scene, butthese young artists where humbled to learn ofthe man that puPNG music onthe international stage Samuel Kila Willie. His group Delepou werethe first to perforPNG music live in Sydney inthe 1960’s, and it was fitting that he was awardedthe Justine Kili Lifetime award.

The night drew on asthe awards kept coming with Leonard Kania Junior scoopingthe album ofthe year. The ther big winners werethe identicals, Betuk and Gary Vaibua.

OSHEN was inducted intothe hall of fame for his contribution tPNG music inthe region.

Whilethe awards night was aimed at recognisingthe efforts in developin PNG music,there are existing concerns over music piracy killingthPNG music industry.
