PNG Council of Church’s Remain Steadfast

by Vasinatta Yama – EM TV, Port Moresby

The PNG Council of Church’s (PNGCC) is maintaining its stance and supports the Catholic Church in their views against the death penalty.

PNGCC Chairman Father Denny Guka told EM TV today that the church’s will continue to push the government to put a stop to it.

The PNGCC is made up of different denominations in PNG. They claim that the death penalty was a disease since 2013 when the government passed the law.

With the vision of how PNG will be in the long run, they claim the government has made a wrong decision in imposing the law in a young country about to receive its 40th independence.

Yesterday, the Catholic Church reaffirmed their stance against the death penalty and urged the government to stick to life sentences with hard labour.

The church’s still do not see the death penalty as a solution for crimes. The move to enforce the death penalty is seen as bad for a Christian country.

They are calling on the government to look into the matter seriously and to consider the effects it will cause. As PNG is approaching its 40th Independence anniversary, Fr Denny Guka says imposing the death penalty is not a way forward.
