PM: Process of Transparency and Accountability Begins

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, saysthe process of transparency and accountability has begun.

 

This comes afterthe District Authority Bell was passed this year.

 

The District Service Improverment Fund was introduced in 2008. Sincethen each district has had 60 million kina allocated to it.

 

An exception for districts inthe new provinces of Hela and Jiwaka.

 

According to Prime Minister Peter O’Neillthe shift in transferringthe money directly tothe districts isthe way forward, in terms of accountability and transparency.

 

He saysthe government throughthe Finance Department is also building up it’s audit and inspection section.

 

He envisionsthere will come a time whenthe public will be able to go online to check howtheir funds are being used.

 

Bet currently in his own electoratethe Prime Minister has his own method of accountability and transparency.

 

 

He said it was a communication and procedural problem, that even some government MP’shad not providedthe required reports to accesstheir DSIP funds.

 

The District Authority bill passed this year is to futher manage funds that will be going tothe districts.
