PM O’Neill on APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, said Papua New Guinea has 38 million hectares of forest cover but effective management of this land is an issue.

He says in order to achieve forest sustainability a number of significant steps are being carried out to improve PNG’s forestry sector.

This involved phasing out abusive practices such as round log exports.

He said the Forest Minister would provide updates on their work and share experience to enhance the forestry sector.

The Prime Minister said this at the opening of the third APEC meeting for ministers responsible for forestry.

“I look forward to the outcomes of this and the range of discussion that will occur in the coming three days,” said the Prime Minister.

O’Neill futher stressed the importance of Papua New Guineas contribution in the APEC process and described the meeting as a great example of the value that the APEC process provides to the economy and the region.
