PM Admits Agricultural Sector been a disappointment

Speaking during the National Press Club meet in Canberra Australia, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill admitted PNG’s agriculture sector has been a disappointment.

“Our agricultural output has generally been disappointing. That is unacceptable given that 80% of our people continue to live in rural communities and given the abandons of our very fertile land well suited for quality agricultural production,” says the Prime Minister.

There is a need to invest in agricultural industries, where Papua New Guineans can meet their own demands by growing their own food, and supply them to other countries in the Asia Pacific region.

In his speech, he said; “we need capital and we need expertise. We also need investments in new agricultural industries, especially an industry that can reduce our reliance on imported foods, and help us meet the growing demand of our growing population within the region.
