Partnership for Sustainable Development Goals

The private sector plays a pivotal role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Papua New Guinea’s business community and civil society have raised their hands to contribute to achieve 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which seeks to eliminate poverty, hunger and address other pressing issues within the next 15 years.

2016 has been touted as a year of partnership. The United Nations, governments around the world, Civil Society and the private sector are working in partnership to implement the global Sustainable Development Goals.

A successful development agenda requires partnerships between all stakeholders involved, as no man is an island.

The inclusive partnerships built between the UNDP, the government of PNG, Civil Society and business houses in the country strive to be based upon principles and values, a shared vision, and shared goals that place our people and our country at the centre.

A two-day workshop was hosted in Port Moresby between all stakeholders to discuss the SDGs, the role of the private sector and civil society in implementing the goals as well as how all stakeholders can work together to accomplish these.

According to the government representatives from the Ministry of Planning, urgent action is needed to mobilise, redirect and unlock the transformative power of private resources to deliver on sustainable development objectives.

Long-term investments, including foreign direct investment, are needed in critical sectors, especially in developing countries like Papua New Guinea.

These include sustainable energy, infrastructure and transport, as well as information and communications technologies.

According to UN Resident Coordinator, Roy Trivedy, the onus is on each and every Papua New Guinean to contribute personally to the growth of the country.

“PNG em Mi na PNG em Yu…before we can develop as a community and as a country, we must develop as individuals”.
