Parliament elects new Speaker

All elected members gathered at 11am this morning at the Parliament Haus to sign their declaration witnessed by Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia and other members of the Parliament.

After all declarations were signed, the parliament nominated and elected the new speaker of parliament.

Member for Finchaffen Open Theo Zurenuoc was nominated by THE Party leader and Member for Kandep Open Don Polye and seconded by Member for Hagen Open William Duma.

The second nominee was the member for Talasia Open Francis Marus. He was nominated by Member for Komo-Magarima Francis Potape and seconded by newly elect Member for Madang Regional Jim Kas.

The nomination was closed by Sir Michael Somare, re-elected member for East Sepik Regional.

Members of Parliament then voted for the new Speaker.

After minutes of waiting, the Parliament announced that the New Speaker of Parliament is Member elect for Finchaffen Open Theo Zurenuoc.

Theo Zurenuoc won with 88 votes, followed by Francis Marus on 17 votes.

Zurenuoc expressed his gratitude to all honourable members for their votes.

The newly elect Speaker of Parliament is now on his way to the Government Haus for his official Swearing In.
