The export market for teak wood is a viable market to look into due to the unique features and high adaptation level of teak wood.
This has caused the Papua New Guinea Forest Authority to look into ways to have a plantation of teak trees through its Monitoring and Evaluation Teak Project.
Teak is a tropical hardwood species of tree scientifically known as Tectona grandis. Teak timber is particularly valued for its durability and its water resistance property.
It is used for boat building, exterior construction, veneer, furniture, carving, turnings, and other small wood projects. This makes the teak tree a demand in the timber market.
The problem currently faced by the Papua New Guinea Forest Authority is the availability of fertile land to plant the trees’ seedlings; and the most fertile land that is suitable for the tree to grow is used for oil palm instead.
