The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) paid tribute to one of their own, Major Lionel Lofena, who died early this month.
He joined the army in 1987 as a Cadet Officer. Major Lofena was actively involved in brokering peace during the Sandline Crisis.
Family and friends gathered yesterday at St John’s Chapel at Taurama Barracks to pay their respects.
Major Lofena hailed from Saroa Babaga village in the Rigo District of Central Province.

At the funeral service, Colonel Mark Goina of the PNG Defence Force described his comrade as hardworking and a dedicated soldier.
He said it was a great loss to the disciplined force and urged others to emulate the standards set by late Major Lofena.
A full military burial was accorded to him at his home village in Saroa Babaga today.
He died at the age of 46 and is survived by wife and 4 children, two brothers and a sister.
