Pacific Islands Exchange Ideas for Water Sustainability In The Region

Better sustainable water for the Pacific region is the key message of the eighth Pacific Water Conference and Expo, which began in the nation’s capital today.

Pacific island nations, including Australia and New Zealand, will exchange ideas and innovative solutions to address accessing sustainable water across Pacific communities.

Leaders have identified that water has become scarce due to threats such as greater development.

Pacific Water and Wastewater Association Chairman, Opetaia Ravai, said the forum that allows all island nations to learn from each other.

 “Water is now scarce and a threat to our region,” Ravai said.

The meeting will discuss opportunities for countries to showcase technical aspects, innovative ideas, and development of sourcing water in a more sustainable way.

Discussions will target water and technology, sustainable water management and sanitation, and current water development in the Pacific.

Water PNG Chief Executive, Raka Taviri Jnr, said exchanging ideas is the best solution as the region faces similar problems in making water sustainable.

“Water is becoming scarce, and sharing our problems and coming up with solutions is the best method”, Taviri said.

The meet was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister, Leo Dion, today in Port Moresby.
