Pacific Games Venues Queried

by Mickey Kavera – EM TV, Port Moresby

The big question in the lead up to July 4th is whether the Pacific Games infrastructure will be ready on time.

Telefomin MP Solan Mirisim raised this question to Minister for Sport, Minister Justin Tkatchenko in parliament today.

“Can the honourable Minister tell the house, the people of Papua New Guinea if the venues will be completed before the opening of the Pacific Games,” Mirisim questioned.

“We have only four months and not even the major sporting venues are completed.”

Sport Minister Justin Tkatchenko, in response, reassured parliament that all venues are on track.

“All major sporting venues are on target and will be ready before July 4th,” he said.

The Minister has confidence that contractor Fletcher Morobe will deliver the Sir John Guise Stadium on time. However, other sporting venues are facing delays.

Progress on the Rita Flynn Netball Court is slow, due to a shortage in foreign currency at the banks.

Minister Tkatchenko says this is an unforseen situation and his in talks with the banks to address this problem. Yesterday, acquittals of K100 million for the Pacific Games National News was presented to Finance Minister James Marape.

He revealed the government will have spent K1.5 billion by the end of the construction phase.
