Out-Of-School Children Initiative Launched

By Meriba Tulo – EM TV, Port Moresby

The global children’s initiative was launched in Port Moresby this week.

The meeting saw the PNG Department of Education, UNICEF, UNESCO and other stakeholders, come together to discuss ways to address the increasing number of school-aged-children, that are not in school.

The meeting was told that in order to provide basic education for each child, new policies must focus specifically on marginalised children.

The Out-Of-School Children Initiative calls for action to invest in better data, and demonstrates that reaching the most marginalised may initially cost more, but also yields greater benefits.

The overall goal of the Out-Of-School Children Initiative is to reduce the number of children who are out of school in PNG by:

  1. Developing detailed profiles of out-of-school children and children in school who are at risk of dropping out;
  2. Assessing the underlying barriers that prevent those children from completing basic education;
  3. Recommending innovative policies and strategies that can bring them into school, and keep them there.

The meeting also shared successful global models and approaches, including good practices in achieving equity through measureable results for children and to equip the National Department of Education to better understand the issues of: Out-Of-School Children Initiative, early childhood development and value education.

These initiatives are to be reflected in the Ministry of Education Plan 2015 – 2024.
