Opposition Replies to 2014 National Budget

The Opposition Leader Belden Namah presented to parliament yesterday a reply criticizingthe government for not clearly indicating howthe deficit will be funded.

 

Mr. Namah’said fromtheir calculations,the deficit will be far greater than what has been projected inthe 15 billion kina budget.

“The delivery ofthe budget is aboverthe actual delivery,there is no waythe 2014 Budget will be delivered. The budget deficit will be larger than estimated. The 2014 budget is politically staged,” Namah’said.
 

He rther thought thatthe agriculture sector should have received more funding because eighty per cent ofthe population depends on this sector.

 

He said he was surprised thatthe government did not have agriculture has one its priority pillars.

 

The opposition acknowledged funding allocated tothe major policy pillars of government but said this was a duplicate ofthe 2013 budget allocation.

 

As part of his reply tothe 2014 budgetoOpposition leader offered several recommendations.

 

The opposition recommended for the government to increasethe tax trash hold from seven thousand kina to fifteen thousand kina to empower low income earners.

 

It also recommended for the government to tighten tariffs to encourage local businesses.
