Olsem Wanem – Episode 31, 2016

In this episode

We visit Bogia District and Sumkar District in Madang Province, where the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with the support of DFAT launched Community Development Plans in two Manam Care Centres and their host communities.

The two care centres are Potsdam in the Bogia District and Mangem in the Sumkar District.

IOM is also working with other villages in the Bogia District such as Bodbod, Kaiyan and Gamai which are located towards the border of Madang and East Sepik Province. These villages are prone to King Tides and Flood. Community Development Plans were also launched in these villages.
IOM’s work in these communities focuses on 2 things

1. Focusing on people who have been displaced from Manam Island and their host communities. Thus, working on reconciliation and peace building between these communities.
2. Also assisting the host community and the Internally Displaced people in disaster preparedness, livelihoods and community development and empowerment.

With that communities are empowered to make informed decisions.

The Community Development Plans highlight priority development areas which the communities would like to work on.

From these key priority areas the communities have contributed a total K10 000, and with that IOM with the support of DFAT has contributed a seed money of K170 00 to complement the efforts of the communities.

Each community will be assisted with K10 000 in materials to assist with their projects.
