As a result of continuing dry weather, the suspension of operations at the Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) project site officially began today.
In a press statement today the company announced this move following a month of preparations to suspend operations the mine.
The company says the limitation imposed on river traffic, resulting from the lack of rainfall in key catchment areas, is affecting their revenue and the reliability of bringing in food, fuel and other essential supplies.
OTML says almost all employees will be stood down and will be repartriated as quickly as possible.
While they are stood down these employees will receive an allowance to meet their basic needs.
Several hundred personnel will be retained on site for care and maintenance of facilities and the provision of essential services.
The duration of this suspension is uncertain, with the company continuing to actively monitor the situation and determine the appropriate time in which to resume operations.
