OO’Neill toIntroduce Tourist Police Act

The attack onthe tourists and porters was raised onthe floor of parliament yesterday by Belolo MP, Sam Besil.

 

He called onthe Prime Minister to mover swiftly and punish those responsible.

Mr. Besil said two porters were killed and twelve tourists injured and rushed tothe Angau General Hospital.

 

He toldthe house that amongthe attackers were three escapees fromthe Wau police station.

 

He called onthe Prime Minister in his capacity as Police Minister to carry out a thorough investigation and punish those responsible underthe death penalty act.

 

“The attack onthe Beack Cat Trail will affect ther tourism sit’s inthe country…since that incidentthe Australian Government has ban travels tPNG,” said Besil.

“Canthese attackers when apprehended, be trialed onthe death penalty?” Besil asked.

The Prime Minister condonedthe act and linkedthe attack to drug and alcohol abuse.

 

Mr. O’Neill told parliament that a Tourist Police Act will be introduced onthe floor to protect local and international tourists.

 

“We havethe biggest potential inthe tourism industry anywhere inthe world; however, such incidents, is not allowing us to fully utilizethe value of that industry,” said O’Neill.

“I am looking at working closely withthe Tourism Promotion Authority withthe concept of Tourist policing…so, when trekkers are going outoour police men and women can accompanythem to provide security,” he said.
 

Mr. Besil also called onthe prime minister to replace all police personnel inthe Wau-Belolo electorates.

 

“Some ofthe attackers are escapees and are known tothe police in Wau, and at times it is difficult to apprehendthem because both parties have some kind of relationships,” said Besil.

The Prime Minister condemnedthe lack of security at all national jails.

 

He said jail breakouts have become frequent and responsible authorities must take upthe responsibility.
