North Fly: Pampenai Road Reconstructed

Pampenai is located inthe Ningerum LLG of North Fly, Western Province. After being neglected for nearly 40 yreasthe Pampenai road will finally be re-constructed.

This road link connects six villages and provides vital access to a large number of registered rubber farms.

 

The village welcomed Governor Ati Wobiro and members ofthe Ok Tedi Development Foundation Limited recently, to launchthe re-construction project of Pampenai road, an important road link that was left to deteriorate for four decades.

 

The 15 kilometre road links Pampenai and five ther villages. It also provides access to more than 106 registered rubber farms. For years farmers have had to carrytheir raw materials for as long as five hours tothe Kiunga/Tabubil highway.

 

Whenthe road deteriorated, many ofthe people living along its corridor moverd to Ningerum station and Kiunga giventhe lack of access to essential services.

 

Ok Tedi Development Foundation Limited facilitatedthe design and reconstruction at 12.1 million kina. Construction period is expected to be 15 months.

 

The project falls under Pampenai’s Community Mine Continuation Agreement with OTDF.

 

The road was first constructed in 1973 underthe government’s rural improverment program.

 

Locals now look forward to returning home to revivetheir rubber activities.
