The Correctional Service commissioner, MartinBeltharza saidthere won’t be any mercy for those prisoners who escape or tries to escape.
He issued orders to his officers atthe Beimo jail yesterday authorizingthem that any prisoner who tries to escape must be shot.
Beltharza said; "there is no reason for prisoners to escape whenthey are being fed and well cared for”.
Three jailbreaks have happened within a month.
Last month, 49 prisoners broke out fromthe Beon Jail in Madang Province. On Sunday, 44 escaped fromthe Beimo jail in Morobe Province. And on Monday this week, anther 3 escaped fromthe Berawagi jail inthe Chimbu Province.
“I would like to warn prisoners that if you jump over those fences or crawl underthem, it'’s your bargain between life and death”,the commissioner said.
He blames poor prison infrastructure and said a major facelift will be carrlied out inthe prisons later on this year.
The propose upgrade ofthe state prisons will come afterthe recent escape of forty-four prisoners atthe Beimo jail.
He saysthere are also plans to recruit new correctional service officers to boostthe current manpower, not only in Beimo but also in ther prisons aroundthe country.
