New Ward Opened at Angau Memorial Hospital

By Colleen Barilae – EM TV, Lae

The Angau Hospital in Lae has seen infrastructure developments, for the past 12 months.

The upgrade plan that is already in place for the development of various buildings also included the construction of three new wards that comprise of 50 beds each.

Over the past years, termites have been eating away some of the hospital’s buildings.

According to Angau CEO, Dr Jim Abrahams, the Angau hospital board and management have been waiting for a response from the Morobe Provincial Building Board, for almost six months, to grant the hospital management approval for occupying the new ward.

Today marks the official approval of the occupancy of one of the three 50-bed wards.

Angau’s Accidents and Emergencies ward takes up the largest number of patients to be admitted per day.

The newly completed 50-bed ward is aimed at reducing the number of patients lying on the floor at the Accidents and Emergency area awaiting treatment.

The board and management of the Angau Memorial Hospital also have plans to build a bigger, modern facility, to support the treatment of cancer in the country.

Angau’s cancer treatment centre is the only cancer diagnosis and treatment facility in the country, which also caters for referrals from the four regions of Papua New Guinea. The facility is headed by Papua New Guinea’s only radiation oncologist, Dr John Niblett.
